Regulatory Updates: Implementation Guidelines for New BIS Standards in India
On August 21, 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued implementation guidelines for the update of the IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025/IEC 62040-1:2017 (Safety Requirements for Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems) standard.
Standard update and implementation schedule:
1.Old version standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2014 / IEC 62040-1:2008
2. New version standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025 / IEC 62040-1:2017
3. Deadline for parallel operation: November 19, 2025. After that, the old standard will be officially revoked
Key points of standard update:
1.Reference document introduction: IEC 62477-1:2012
2. New term definition: Portable UPS
3. New test terms added: short-time withstand current, asynchronous load switching test, coolant loss test, dry heat/wet heat test, and water pressure test
4. Upgraded test requirements: creepage distance test, flame retardancy of the casing, firmness of the handle, capacitor discharge, temperature rise test, input current
What does it mean for enterprises?
1.All existing certified enterprises are required to complete the submission of the test report and the declaration of conformity for the new version of the standard before the deadline
2.Enterprises that fail to complete the standard switch by the deadline will face certificate cancellation or model deletion
3. New applicants must clearly commit to completing the implementation of the new version of the standard before the deadline
